Thanks for visiting. I’m assuming you want to know more about who is behind this website, otherwise, why would you be on the About page?
I’m John. I’m a father of two boys, ages 11 and 9, and they’re into Dungeons & Dragons.
During the summer of 2015, my oldest son Jack “made a game”. It was hand drawn on paper, had boxes for pieces to move to/from. Each class of character had certain moves and advantages. The “ninja” did piercing damage and could turn invisible. The “archer” had a ranged attack. We play tested it, and he told me he was really interested in how games work. So, I introduced him to D&D, as to me, Dungeons & Dragons was kind of the ultimate game: rules that mattered, but were ever changing, based on building trust with a group of friends about how the game should work, all while being full of imagination, creativity and story telling. D&D’s at its best when the story telling is collaborative and the Dungeon Master is just part of the story. That’s when the players have the most fun.
So, I’m playing D&D again after a 25 year hiatus. I haven’t played since the 1980s, when I was a young teenager. I’m 40 now, and my player group is eight or nine 8-11 year old boys that are my sons’ friends. I’m learning and re-learning how to play as I dive back in.
I’m diving back into D&D because I’ve learned as I grow older that there are fewer and fewer things that I can bond with my children over as they grow up, so I’m taking every opportunity I can to dive in!
This blog is really for me. It’s a place for me to share what I’m learning. It’s a place for me to blog about new products I’m into. It’s a place for me to get feedback from others that are just starting to game, or that are veterans of the field.
